10 online business opportunities one can start during lockdown

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about disruptions across the world and is fast causing an unprecedented economic crunch.

But a time of crisis can also be a time of opportunity. Although physical interactions have been halted, online connections aren’t. This serves as the best time to venture into online entrepreneurship and below are some of the ideas you can choose to capitalise on.

Affiliate Marketing

One of the best ways to make money online is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting a company’s

or other people’s products.

With this type of business, you don’t have to develop any products yourself, what you need is a site to sell other people’s products and receive a commission for each sale you make.

Delivery Services

With very minimal capital, especially if you already have a bike or vehicle, starting a delivery service is a very attainable goal.

With citizens advised to stay home because of the lockdown they still need access to essentials like food and hygiene supplies among others. This is a good time to join professional delivery services that have so far stepped up to ensure efficient supply for both businesses and households.

You might choose to specialise in a specific type of delivery such as, delivering food or choose to deliver all kinds of packages.

Business Consulting

Many businesses are now operating remotely, and this being a new and abrupt arrangement, there will be need for new expertise.

A number of processes have been automated and companies are promptly seeking new methods and business models to fit the adjustment. Right from helping businesses going digital, to running marketing campaigns and giving advice on the required IT tools, as a consultant you have plenty to do. You will aid your clients with designing a business model or marketing plan and also determine which marketing techniques to use and how to use them at a time like this.

E-commerce Store

Online retail is a booming business. An e-commerce platform is a software solution that allows businesses to create online stores. With this, you can sell products or services to people by utilising delivery services to transport products to customers.

The key to success in this business is to drive enough traffic to your site.

Some of the products that can be sold include digital products like software, physical goods as well as services.

Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is vital for any business and a very vital asset for growth in this period. With less physical interactions, brands are seeking quality traffic, awareness and exposure. Now is the best time to venture into digital marketing to help businesses establish an authoritative online presence.

Equipped with savvy and analytical business skills as a digital marketer, you will be responsible for developing, implementing and managing marketing campaigns that promote a company’s products or services as well as enhancing website traffic and acquiring customers.

Virtual Assistant

With both employers and people wanting to have a more flexible work-life, being a virtual assistant is an online job that is growing in popularity.

Almost every small business needs help running their day-to-day administrative tasks. And what’s timely about this is that even with the lockdown, you can offer such services from a remote location. As a virtual assistant, you can offer services offered by a traditional assistant such as paying bills, scheduling appointments or managing expense repayments.

Website Creation

Website developing involves writing web design programs in a variety of computer languages, such as HTML or JavaScript Creating. Becoming a web developer in such a crisis that is pushing most companies to become digital can be pretty lucrative, however, you will need to learn how to code.  And the best part is that you’re not tied down to one location hence you can work from anywhere.

Professional Freelancer

The present state has created opportunities for people who want to make a living freelancing in their chosen field. One can choose to venture into writing or graphic design among other fields.

No matter what field business is operating, many companies tend to utilise freelancers. Businesses are practically in search of writers, programmers, designers, accountants among others.

Buy and sell Domains

A domain name is the address where internet users can access your website. They are basically used in URLs to identify particular web pages. If you want to make good money online, buying and selling domain names can be a great start.

First, you will need to know the best places you can buy domains from, where to sell your domains, how to transfer a domain to a buyer, how much you should sell your domains for, and if there are any trademark issues when it comes to buying and selling domain names.

A number of people buy and sell domain names to earn money online since it takes very little time or investment. You can purchase a domain at its registration price or even much cheaper and then resell it for a profit.

Become a Vlogger / YouTuber

This has become one of the most popular trends on the internet. Vlogging (video blogging) is a practice of capturing and sharing vlogs that typically feature a vlogger shooting themselves doing varying activities. Through clicks and views as well advertisements, vloggers are able to make good money.

Although this activity cannot be profitable overnight, it can be a lucrative online profession in the long run.

Digital Education-26-04-2020

What is digital education?

Digital education is the innovative use of digital tools and technologies during teaching and learning, and is often referred to as Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) or e-Learning. Exploring the use of digital technologies gives educators the opportunity to design engaging learning opportunities in the courses they teach, and these can take the form of blended or fully online courses and programmes.

Blended learning

screengrab Teaching Matters blog

“Blended approaches use multiple methods to deliver learning by combining face-to-face interactions with online activities”.

An example of blended learning is the flipped classroom where online activities are completed outside the classroom providing an opportunity for more in-depth discussion during the face-to-face time spent in class.

How Digital Education Is Transforming Teaching Methods

Schools are slowly looking at technology as an opportunity to develop teaching methods and resonate with students on a technology level. Regardless of age, almost everyone owns a smartphone. Google is our library, and Wikipedia is our encyclopedia. Thesaurus is our dictionary, and Kindle is our textbook. At a time like this, learning to change our teaching methods by incorporating technology is the only way to bring light to the lives of our students. What are schools doing in order to bring about this change?

 1. Smart Class

Teaching with a whiteboard, chalk, and markers are now a thing of the past, and teachers have shifted to making use of projectors, VCD, DVD players and eLearning system to display tutorial videos and short sessions online to help understand that learning can be fun too. Many schools now come with a TV or a projector attached to their whiteboard where it is easy to shift from a normal classroom session to an interactive digital session. This can make students pay more attention as we are now in the digital era where Google is our go-to place.

 2. Being Digitally Updated

In a tech-savvy world, education can become easily outdated, as there is always something new happening. Equipping students to be updated with news and other subject-related topics is the best way to teach students to grow as a person. Students spend most of their time on their laptops, their phones, and their iPads. Knowing what sources students can refer to, online, and knowing which websites offer the best information can be a great way to guide students.

 3. Converting Books To PDFs

Books are now taken to Kindle and other Tabs. Sending them notes, references, and other information in PDF formats that can be easily accessed on laptops, phones, and tabs is a good way to encourage students to choose to study better.

 4. Encouraging Online Tests

Training students on subjects by conducting fun online tests from time to time can create a good learning environment for them. Students can be given online quizzes and assessments that they can take from home, replacing general homework that they find excuses for.

 5. Conducting Online Webinars

How attentive are students when there is only a one-way communication with the teacher standing in front of a whiteboard? We find the classroom becoming noisy or students becoming easily disinterested in the topic. Conducting online seminars and webinars, enabling all students to engage in commenting and participating in questionnaires can help them stay alert. Keeping students interested throughout a lecture is an art and a talent that teachers need to have, to benefit from the entire teaching-learning process. It is very vital that students engage in seminars and the lectures involve two-way communication.

6. Supporting Online Research

Similar to how a teacher is well prepared for a classroom session, encouraging students to be prepared too, can drive students to be excited about taking up classes. Online research is trending and people find exciting careers in Market Research and more. Asking students to find something online that is difficult to find or encouraging online research by giving them a list of things to find before the next class is a good way to keep students looking forward to more classes. It really does feel like a great achievement knowing you’ve found something that no other student could find. Giving them rewards or appreciating their online findings can encourage students to make the best use of the digital resources they have.

7. Creating Communities

The interaction between a teacher and a student does not have to end at school, in a classroom. An online community is where a group or a team stay connected online, submitting projects, discussing topics or expressing ideas. Teachers can set a platform for students to communicate their ideas, suggestions and subject-related queries, for them to solve any time. Being open to online activities like these keep students more focused even outside of school, without realizing the fact that the learning process continues even after classes are done.

Summary

Textbooks, homework, classroom notebooks, whiteboard, chalk, and markers are now history. Smartboards are introduced where teachers can drag and drop shapes, bring in online calculators on the board, measure with AR tools and voice out the text they want to see on the board. How practical is it to be disconnected from the digital world when students are way faster in terms of technology? Schools are now offering to provide free tablets and Kindle-like tabs for students to take notes in. It is time to collaborate teaching methodology with technology and make classroom sessions more lively and interesting!Educational Technology Tools

Digital Marketing: Why is it important to your business?

WHAT DOES A DIGITAL MARKETER DO?

Careers

Digital marketing has its own industry niche where the required qualifications go beyond basic marketing strategies and creative skills.

If you are considering entering the digital marketing industry, understanding the skills required and what digital marketers do is a good place to begin.

The Digital Marketer Defined

In general terms, a digital marketer is responsible for using digital channels to generate leads and build brand awareness. Digital channels include:

  • Company websites
  • Social media
  • Search engine rankings
  • Email marketing
  • Online display ads
  • Corporate blogs

Beyond this, the digital marketer must also use measurable analytics to identify weaknesses and find ways to improve performance across these channels. In this role, you can be responsible for all aspects of a company’s digital strategy or just focus on one.

Smaller companies tend to have one general specialist or manager while corporations can spread the responsibilities around to an entire team or even across several different departments.

This (general specialist) is responsible for driving relevant consumers with the goal of improving brand recognition [and] trust and ultimately drive purchase intent – Justin Emig, VP of Marketing & Innovation, Web Talent Marketing

The Many Facets of Digital Marketing

In digital marketing, you can choose to be a jack-of-all-trades or focus on one or two skills to set you apart. For example, being a strong creative individual who also understands coding or a techy person who gets how important content is to social media.

It is a field where experience or a good internship speaks volumes. “Certifications are the new degree,” continues Justin Emig. There are many online certifications you can get to add to your credibility, not to mention building your own online presence and social media pages with plenty of followers. That is often the best way to draw attention to yourself if you want a career in digital marketing.

The overall skills and areas of expertise for a digital marketer include:

  • Video: It’s hard to catch people’s attention online. Stats show that video increases engagement while ranking higher on Google. You don’t have to become a video producer but instead, focus on the basics of creating a video. Having an understanding of how to write scripts, use the platforms and apps to create videos, and what works in videos will add to your appeal when applying for digital marketing jobs.
  • SEO & SEM: Online searches drive digital ads. You have to understand search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) in order to work in the field. You don’t have to worry about the back-end techy stuff here. It’s more about understanding the importance of SEO and the best practices used in the industry. That is the 101 of any digital marketing campaign or content management initiative. Understanding how SEO and SEM affect your online efforts will allow you to work with the rest of a digital team without looking like you are in the wrong business.
  • Content Marketing: Content is what is used to attract and engage customers whether it is a website, video, social media or blogging. It can also entail anything people can access online such as whitepapers, case studies, how-to booklets, and more. Understanding the aspects of content, how it is created, how it is effective, and how best to use it will provide the wealth of information needed for just about any digital marketing role. You will have to understand how best to use content to help a business meet their goals including social media. Depending on what level of work you are seeking within the digital marketing industry you will also have to understand content strategy and analysis.
  • Data & AnalyticsGoogle Analytics is central to many facets of digital marketing. You can track reports, but what is more important is how to use the information you find. Monitoring campaigns and applying findings based on consumer behavior will allow you to come up with better solutions that will increase conversions and drive traffic. Gathering and using data is also essential as the data collected by today’s businesses is like a gold mine that has to be used in innovative ways to collect and retain new customers.
  • Design Thinking: The user experience is the key to successful digital marketing. Design thinking is crucial as it teaches companies how best to engage customers, but beyond that, it ensures that their online experiences are simple and effective. That can include using online shopping sites, accessing information, and other things your company might offer to customers including customized apps.

You have to learn to see beyond the ideas presented to you and be able to look ahead at the potential issues it might cause. You must be able to suggest improvements based on these instincts and ensure your ideas are feasible.

  • Tech Knowledge: Technology is the driving force in the digital world, so you will have to understand what the latest technology is and how it is being used. You have to adapt quickly to changes in the industry and know what’s coming so that your digital marketing plans are up to date. Using technology has to come easy to you, and you cannot be intimidated by change. No matter where you want to begin (or end up) in your career, some knowledge of web coding and Content Management (CMS) systems are a must.
  • Understand Engagement: More than ever before you will need an understanding of how best to engage a customer. You will need great powers of persuasion in order to conceive innovative campaigns that will help grow the business. You have to understand what gets today’s consumer to make the commitment and convert to making a purchase.

It is not enough to just get people to follow your social media pages. You also have to persuade from within. Your team, fellow departments, and leaders will have to be convinced that where you want to put the money is the right thing to do. Understanding all aspects from SEO to content and the latest technology to what people respond to is the best way to keep people on board with your plans.

Common Digital Marketing Positions

If you want to get more specific and explore the types of positions available in digital marketing, there are many career paths you can choose including:

  • SEO Manager: In this position, you will use your skills as an SEO expert to help drive content and improve a company’s content. Your input would be used to keep content creators on target with valuable insight into the strategy required to enhance performance on Google as well as social media.
  • Content Marketing Specialist: In this role, you will be the creator of content coming up with a plan and often a strategy to ensure you increase traffic as well as Google rankings. You would create a plan for what material to use from video to blogging and social media. You might report to an SEO Manager or work in the marketing department using the SEO team’s keywords to improve your content’s effectiveness.
  • Social Media Manager: A social media manager would focus on social media creating an effective schedule for posts and overseeing or, in some cases, creating the posts. Again, a crossover is always possible in which case you might work with a content marketing specialist, SEO people, and other digital marketers as part of an overall digital marketing strategy.
  • Marketing Automation Coordinator: This position would deal with the effects and results of a marketing campaign. It is also a more technology-focused position in which you would be finding the best software to help discover important customer behaviors. You would be involved in measurement and statistics while tracking campaign performance.
  • Digital Marketing Manager: In this position, you would oversee developing the overall content strategy as well as marketing campaigns. Your job will involve enhancing brand awareness while driving traffic with the goal of acquiring new customers. You will often be responsible for keeping up with new technology to optimize your digital marketing efforts. Analysis of your marketing efforts will also be required in order to track the results of your campaigns.

Leadership in Digital Marketing

Digital marketing sees constant change and requires a forward-thinking mind. You have to be a pioneer, continually championing the latest industry changes. You also have to have a collaborative spirit and be willing to work with other departments.

An appreciation for branding is also essential as you will have to build an online presence that reflects the brand. An analytical mind is helpful as you will have to look at data and learn how to extract the pertinent information that will keep your strategy strong. In a nutshell, you have to be tried and true in your beliefs that digital marketing reigns supreme, keep up to date to support your opinions, but also work well with others, so people want to help see your ideas come to fruition.

Digital marketing leadership requires you to influence others and drive results through collaboration. You must be able to work with colleagues and contacts at all levels of an organization to develop compelling offers and drive growth –
